Department of Energy Informational Exchanges (Poster Sessions)

June 17, 2010 : The second in the series of informal public meetings was held June 17, 2010 at the Vern Riffe Career Technology Center. The U.S. Department of Energy, its contractors, and the Site Specific Advisory Board (SSAB) held the public informational poster session on accelerated cleanup progress, planning for the D&D project, and other topics of interest at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant.

May 28, 2009 : The first in the series of informal public meetings was held May 28, 2009, at the Vern Riffe Career Technology Center. The meeting provided stakeholders with updated information on the current environmental cleanup actions, planned accelerated cleanup projects being funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and preparations toward the Decontamination and Decommissioning (D&D) of the gaseous diffusion plant.

Following updates on progress of the cleanup program at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant, members of the newly-formed Environmental Management Site Specific Advisory Board for the Portsmouth site are introduced. Officials from the U.S. Department of Energy and the various contractors at the site also presented information and fielded questions from a large crowd in attendance.

Ceremony Marks Achievement

The Portsmouth/Paducah Project Office (PPPO) held a ceremony at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant on July 27, 2007 to recognize completion of a major cleanup action with the removal of more than 49,000 containers of hazardous and mixed waste from the X-7725 building andBill Murphie joins Larry Clark (center), DOE's Assistant Manager For Nuclear Fuel Supply, in presenting a ceremonial key to the facility to Dan Rogers, Director, American Centrifuge Plant. the availability for turnover of the facility from DOE to USEC Inc. for industrial reuse by the commercial centrifuge program.

The cleanup action reduced more than 20,000 tons of waste generated from the nearly 50 years of uranium enrichment operations formerly at the plant and from cleanup activities conducted since the early 1990s. The volume of waste removed from the building would cover a football field nearly 14 feet deep.

LATA/Parallax, DOE's environmental remediation contractor, removed the last containers from the building on May 31, 2007 to free up the more than 265,000 square feet of storage space.

2005 : LATA/Parallax Portsmouth, LLC (LPP) received the "Group Safety Award" from the Ross County Safety Council. The council, a managed program of the Ross County Chamber of Commerce and subsidized by the Bureau of Workers' Compensation, recognized LPP as the company with the lowest incident rate in a safety council group.

 ► 2005 : LATA/Parallax Portsmouth, LLC also received the "100 Percent Award" from the Ross County Safety Council. The council recognized LPP "for outstanding effort by supervisory personnel and employees in operating the entire year without a lost-time injury."
